ROLY MAGNESS WAS aged just 15 when he unofficially founded Magness Sound in 1935. Roly designed and built his own amplifiers and loudspeakers, some of which are still on display in our central Auckland office. Sound Equipment Rental was the main source of income back then with some sales as the market for audio entertainment grew. To facilitate the market requirements Roly also quickly diversified into servicing refrigeration.

The advent of WW2 saw Roly conscripted, but not to active duty, instead he would oversee the maintenance of refrigeration on visiting allied war ships.

In 1945 he decided to open a retail outlet at 71 New North Road in Eden Terrace. Sound systems were still a major part of the business but were separate from the retail store which sold radios and whiteware appliances. At one stage this store grew to incorporate a factory and service department producing Magness brand refridgerators.

Over the years there have been many ups and downs with the expansion of retail to 3 well established Auckland stores. Magness Sound is still going strong and the team shows no sign of stopping any time soon
